Best Town for Day Hikes?
I want to stay in a small town for 8 days and do day hikes, where should i go?
There is lots of great day hiking all over Costa Rica, especially in the country’s numerous National Parks
, so it’s hard to narrow your hiking options down to just one town. However, if pressed, I would probably point you towards Puerto Jimenez
on the Osa Peninsula
where you will have access to Corcovado National Park
via two trailheads.
Corcovado National Park is huge and will easily take three days to explore just some of its trails, with its eight distinct habitats and thirteen ecosystems. It’s also some of the last primary rainforest in Costa Rica.
That’s just one recommendation though. There are a lot of distinct hiking opportunities in Costa Rica, featuring different types of terrain, flora, and fauna. For instance, there is plenty of hiking in and around the cloud forests of Monteverde
, and also around the neighboring Arenal Volcano
outside La Fortuna
. So it really depends what type of hiking you like. If it were me, I’d probably spend a few days around Monteverde and La Fortuna, then head down to Corcovado for four days to do some trekking there.
Another word of advice - please be cautious hiking around the national parks. Trails are not always well marked or they can be washed out by weather. Be aware of this, especially during rainy season. The possibility of getting lost while hiking in Costa Rica is very real so be very well prepared with extra gear, and better yet, hire a guide. Even Costa Rica’s Minister of Energy and the Environment was lost for three days in 2006 when accidentally separated from his hiking party in Corcovado National Park, so just take precautions. And importantly, have fun!
