It is easy by bus. However, renting a car is always a better option. You can go anywhere at anytime without worrying about missing the bus. If you do not want to spend a lot of money in the rental, check www.renta4x4incostarica.com This company has the lowest rates and are all-inclusive so you do not have to worry about insurance or any other charges.
