18 Hole Costa Rica Golf Courses
Cariari Country ClubThe par 71 course at Cariari Country club was designed by famed architect George Fazio and was the first championship golf course in Central America for close to twenty years. Construction was completed in 1973 by George's nephew, Tom Fazio.
Though this course is part of a private, "member's only" country club, guests of the Hotel Ramada Herradura are eligible to play here at a discounted rate!
From the blue tees the course measures 6,577 yards. It has a slope of 132 and a course rating of 71.9. It is located near the Juan Santamaria International airport and just 15 minutes outside of San Jose.
Cariari was built on an old coffee plantation with numerous hills and slopes. The course fairways are tree lined and tight making accuracy more important than length off the tee. The course has Bermuda grass greens that are relatively large and fast, but often protected by numerous bunkers. The course hosts various Central and South American tournaments and was host to the PGA's Friendship Cup on various occasions. It is widely considered to be one of the best Costa Rica golf courses, if not the best.
Amongst the services offered here are a small pitch and putt course, a driving range, and an illuminated putting green. As of writing, the greens fees are $60 per round.
Garra de Leon Golf Course at Melia Paradisus Playa Conchal Beach & Golf ResortThis beautiful par 72 golf course located at Playa Conchal in Brasilito, Guanacaste is about half way between Playas del Coco and Tamarindo.
The parkland style Robert Trent Jones II designed course plays 6,956 yards from the tips with maximum slope of 137 and a 73.8 course rating at it's longest.
Hemmed in by dry tropical forest and stunning ocean vistas, this large and open course follows the naturally rolling landscape. There are numerous lakes and ravines, but the Bermuda grasss greens are generally large. Good scores are not uncommon here even on your first time out.
Sunny Guanacaste usually provides enough light for pretty early rounds which youc can complete before breakfast, and then spend the hottest parts of the day pool or beach. Rounds at Garra de Leon cost $175 with a cart.
Parque Valle del SolLocated just 10 minutes from San Jose in the Santa Ana Valley, the Tracy May designed Valle del Sol Golf Course is a part of the exclusive Parque Valle del Sol residential community. However, the course is open to the public with rounds costing $95, or $75 if you play after 1:30pm.
At it's longest and most difficult, the par 72 Valle del Sol plays 7,011 yards with a slope of 145, a course rating of 73.2, and a slope of 145. There are numerous water hazards including six lakes and patches of wetlands so accuracy is important off the tee. There are numerous tees to vary the length of the couse according to your skill level. I also read that a couple tee boxes are on islands.
La Iguana Golf Course at Los Suenos Marriott Ocean & Golf ResortThis Ted Robinson Jr. designed par 72 is just north of Jaco. From the tips this course measures 6,698 yards with a slope of 145 and a course rating of 73.4.
Flanked by the Pacific Ocean on one side and the lush, dense tropical rainforest of the Central Pacific coast, this course offers stunning views of the sea and the jungle canopy. The people at Los Suenos Marriot have come up with an innovative idea for distinguishing La Iguana from other Costa Rica golf courses - they assign all groups a forecaddie. While this caddie does help out with golf shots and reading the breaks on the greens, his most important function is as a guide to point out all the magnificent flora and fauna along the course. He'll make sure you don't miss out on seeing that keel billed toucan or beautiful bromeliad. The cost of the guide is relative to his services - you can pay whatever you feel he was worth.
For hotel guests and non-guests, 18 holes cost $130 and $160 respectively. These prices drop to $110 and $130 after 12pm. Replays are $25. For 9 holes the prices are $90 and $100.
Hacienda Pinilla Beach Resort & Residential CommunityThe golf course at Hacienda Pinilla is a par 72 that stretches 7,274 yards from the black tees, making it the longest of the Costa Rica golf courses. It's slope rating is 128 and the course rating is 74.7. The course is a Mike Young design, an architect with numerous first-class courses to his credit in the southern United States.
The course hugs the coast and features open fairways with challenging ocean breezes requiring well thought shot alignment. Another distinguishing element of the golf course are the numerous and strategically placed pot bunkers that guard the greens. The greens themselves are hard and fast. Surrounding the course is dry tropical forest which features thick brush and deciduous trees. Greens fees are $225 for 18 holes, $95 for 9 holes. The twilight rate is $75 and starts after 2:30pm.
The course measures 6,788 yards from the blacks or 6,522 from the Blues with a course rating of 71.9 and a slope of 141. The fairways are wide and rolling and the greens are large and contoured, providing enough just enough challenge to keep things fun.
The rates are $195 for a round, including a cart. After 2pm the Twilight greens fee is $130. Working in Playas del Coco, I saw the Four Four Seasons almost every day and I must say that it's truly spectacular. Staying there you're likely to see some celebrities. It's rumored that Michael Jordan has a villa there and in my year living in Costa Rica some of the other celebrity guests have been Brian Adams, Lisa Kudrow, Brad Pitt, and Angelina Jolie.
Rancho Las Colinas / Royal Pacific Golf & Country ClubThis par 72 Ron Garl design is located by Playa Grande and Playa Flamingo, just 20 minutes from the Paradisus Playa Conchal course and plays 6,410 yards from the Blue Tees, 6,802 from the tips. The course slope is 122 and the rating is 71.8. Searching the web I've found the course under both names - Rancho Colinas and Royal Pacific.
A river borders much of the first nine holes, which are relatively flat. The back nine traverses numerous hills and cuts a swath through rockier terrain. Forecaddies are required for all groups and carts are included in the greens fees.
