Playa Samara Costa Rica

Playa Samara Costa Rica is located on the Pacific coast about half way down the Nicoya Peninsula, about 26km south of Nosara. It's a fun and reasonably priced beach town popular both with Costa Ricans and tourists. The town is located in the center of a light-grey sand beach, part of a crescent shaped bay that stretches 5km.

Playa Samara Costa Rica
The relative proximity to San Jose, range of budget accommodations, and tranquil beach waters suitable for swimming draw in a lot of visitors. Playa Samara itself is hemmed in by two forest tufted hills and the north and south ends of the beach.

There is a barrier reef running along the entrance of the bay where most of the waves break, allowing just enough surf to provide some fun for beachgoers.

The reef on the outside of Samara bay offers good snorkeling and diving opportunities. There's also a small islet at the southern end of Playa Samara called Isla Chora which is also great for snorkeling and perfect for kayaking.

While there aren't any major swells in Samara Costa Rica, the smaller waves make for a perfect place to learn how to surf and you'll find a handful of surf shops where you can find instructors to teach you.

Playa Samara offers all the other activities you'd expect in a popular beach town including ATV tours, fishing charters, scuba diving, horseback riding, dolphin spotting tours, and even a canopy tour company. Many of these activities can be set up with Tio Tigre Tours (506/2656-0098) or Samara Travel Center (506/2656-0922). One unique experience is the chance to go up in an ultralight plane and even get lessons on how to fly at the Flying Crocodile Lodge (506/2656-8048, $75 for a 20min tour).
