Quepos Fishing

Sport fishing here is not limited to billfish though. There is also great inshore fishing for a variety of species. Dorado (mahi mahi), yellow fin tuna, wahoo, snook, amberjack, mackerel, cubera and even the elusive roosterfish can be caught here year round.

If you really want to land a roosterfish, consider chartering a multiday trip from Quepos down to Drake Bay and Isla Canos. This area is also known for large cubera, snapper, and wahoo.

While all the fish I've mentioned can be caught at any time of year around Quepos, the list below will give you an idea of the best times of year for particular species.

However, the monthly recommendations are based on 'typical' biting patterns. Any true angler knows what happens in reality is subject to the whims of Mother Nature. For more detailed information check out my Costa Rica fishing page.

Quepos Fishing Seasons by Species

• Sailfish: November to April is best, the rest of the year is very good.
• Blue Marlin: May, October and November are best. April through December is Very Good.
• Black Marlin: July through September and December are best. May, June, October, and November are very good.
• Dorado: May through October is best, when the rivers are flowing heavily and washing out debris which they like to congregate under. But Dorado are caught often throughout the year.
• Snapper: In season all year.
• Snook: Best from July through November,.
• Yellowfin Tuna: Best from May to December.
• Roosterfish: Elusive, but excellent availability year round.
